Service History

This vehicle entered service with the PTE in 1975, it represents the first batch of many Ailsa buses bought by GGPTE after the satisfactory test and evaluation of three buses with this then newly designed chassis. The vehicle is rare, as it was one of very few Ailsas that carried this style of Alexanders bodywork, with the Atlantean style roof and the panoramic windows. The vehicle spent its life in Glasgow up until 1993 when it was withdrawn from service by Strathclyde's Buses, and after that  heres how it's story goes: in 1994 it purchased by Bell, Newtonards (Northern Ireland), later on in 1994 it was purchased by Black Prince - an operator well known for being a fan of the Ailsa. By 1995 it was purchased by Walsh & O’Brien, Gilmoss, but never was used. Later on in 1995, it was sold to Ripley, Carlton - for scrap. Luckily, the 4738 Preservation Group of Birmingham rescued this vehicle from a sticky end for such a unique vehicle. In 1999 it was sold to a preservationist in Doncaster, who then sold it to it's current owner in 2001 - which meant the vehicle was to return home across the border. This bus is now in Glasgow Corporation fleet colours, it is expected to be part of the operational fleet.
